Employee Assistance Program (EAP)for Corporates

“An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a voluntary, work-based program that offers free and confidential assessments, short-term counseling, referrals, and follow-up services to employees who have personal and/or work-related problems. EAPs address a broad and complex body of issues affecting mental and emotional well-being, such as alcohol and other substance abuse, stress, grief, family problems, and psychological disorders. EAP counselors also work in a consultative role with managers and supervisors to address employee and organizational challenges and needs. Many EAPs are active in helping organizations prevent and cope with workplace violence, trauma, and other emergency response situation’

Statistics show that if employee problems are left unaddressed, they can directly impact the organization's bottom line. A study published in 1998, and sponsored by the Health Enhancement Research Organization, surveyed over 46,000 workers at several U.S. companies and reported:

 - 18.5% of the employees were screened as highly stressed and their medical claims averaged 46% higher than those without high stress.

 - 2.2% of the employees were screened as depressed, and their medical claims averaged 70.2% higher than those without depression.

-Drug reliant employees incur 300% higher medical costs and benefits, compared with healthy co-workers.                                                                                                                                                                                   (U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Workers at Risk: Drugs and Alcohol on the Job. 1990)

In India, there is a change in lifestyle of people such as moving towards nuclear family life, less time devoted to children with both parents working, change in relationships, hectic working schedule, the pressure of targets, traveling long distances, getting stuck in traffic, and health problems. Also, the majority of Indian workforce consists of people working in the age group of 25 to 40 years for whom these problems become manifold. This creates a state of anxiety, stress and frustration among employees who find it difficult to manage their work and personal life. Some of them get involves in anti-social activities such as drugs and drinking alcohol to overcome these problems. Thus, all this affects the concentration and performance of the employees at work.

The organisation nowadays, treat workforce as assets rather than machines and our providing various benefits to the employees for their welfare. One of the most important benefits is Employee Assistance Program which helps employees as well as their families to remain physically as well as mentally fit. This is done by providing counseling as well as other services so as to assist and provide guidance to employees on how to solve their personal and work-related problems
